Research interests / activities

I am the founder and chief editor of the Animal Studies Journal, and co-editor, with Fiona Probyn-Rapsey and Yvette Watt, of the Animal Publics book series published by Sydney University Press.

My research and publications in animal studies focuses primarily on cows – in many ways this scholarly work is informed and inspired by the cows in the herd I have lived alongside for about 30 years. I also work in the fields of modernist literature and modernist Australian art and have curated a number of exhibitions of the work of Australian women modernists, shown at venues including Heide Museum of Modern Art and the Margaret Olley Arts Centre.  I co-curated the Animaladies exhibition with Yvette Watt and Madeleine Boyd at Interlude Gallery.
