Research interests / activities:

My name is Ali Hickling and I am a PhD Student at the University of the Sunshine Coast. My research focus is the commodification of breast milk and the exploitation of the maternal body. This research explores issues related to Marxist feminism, ecofeminism and the political economy. The ways in which the capitalist system exploits the maternal body can be applied similarly to the ways the system exploits animals and the “products” taken from them.

I presented at the Australasian Association of Writing Programs conference last year (Nov 2020) on the representation of breastfeeding in contemporary Australian women’s fiction.
