I am undertaking a PhD in Creative Writing at the University of Melbourne. My research looks at representations of nonhuman animals in literature, and particularly in Australian poetry. I am interested in drawing out the multiplicity of ways in which the nonhuman animal is communicated, miscommunicated, or transformed by representation in human language. Particular emphasis is placed on the gaps, overlaps, and disjunctures that arise from the use of the written word to represent animal being. Although I question anthropocentric representations of animals I also acknowledge the inevitable entanglements and intersections of animal and human experience. In my theoretical and creative work I consider how language can be employed in contemporary Australian poetry to create affective connections between humans and animals while maintaining distinct differences of being.
