Baker, Gabrielle

Research interests / activities:

Gabrielle Baker is a visual artist whose mixed media practice encompasses film, photography, drawing and sculptural installation. Her work focuses on a belief that creativity is inscribed in our animal natures. A shared animality can be seen in unconscious states giving substantial shape to our lives – to our actions, our desires and our dreams. But the relationships that bind human beings to other species, in particular, our use of animal form as cultural mirror, give rise to crucial, unresolved questions. Baker would like the viewer to be aware of the animal that looks outside the frame, for us to be aware of our (human) projections and to see them as a form of connection, not simply one of objectification.

Exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally. A Masters by Research at the University of Melbourne completed in 2007.
