I am a PhD candidate in the Department of Social Inquiry at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia. My PhD thesis looks at current debates relating to the ways in which dogs are bred, bought and sold in Victoria, Australia in light of the Domestic Animals Amendment (Puppy Farm and Pet Shop) Act 2017. I am particularly interested in how contemporary and historical discourses about dog ‘breeds’ inform and shape our current interactions with companion dogs. In addition, my work explores how ideas around being an ‘ethical’ and ‘responsible’ dog owner are navigated and understood by dog carers. I analyse how these discourses all struggle for authenticity and legitimacy in public debates about dogs, questioning what implications these ideas may present for the welfare of various groups of dogs in Victoria.
